Joy Mining (a division of Joy Global) has built a new parts distribution warehouse in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 4 Lean-Lift machines will be utilized to store small maintenance parts for mining machinery and equipment.

Each of the 4 Lean-Lifts will be heavy-duty machines with a height of over 44 feet. Two of the machines with a payload of 60 tons will have a tray weighing device in the access opening to ensure that the machine is loaded uniformly. One of the 60 ton machines will be fitted with bi-lateral support rails to accommodate heavier items when they are loaded and off-loaded from the container; the items will be loaded and off-loaded by means of an overhead crane.

Joy Mining previously used vertical lift modules from a competitor as well as AS/RS stacker cranes for their storage of parts. Several competitors bid on this project as well, but after presenting a complete business case to them and explaining to them the benefits of employing Hänel technology, they decided to purchase the 4 Lean-Lifts. While you don't normally associate mining with Hänel, this is another good example of working with the suppliers to a vertical market such as mining, oil and gas, or aviation.
